Our work is rooted in the Mill House Community which is a small group of people committed to forging a way of life born out of the land. We see ourselves as a ‘community of place’ which means that we are bounded by the land on which we live. We cultivate the ground and endeavour to be in conversation with the ecological realm that supports us. This is different from being in a community of ‘interest’ where people share a particular belief system or religious faith. Instead each of us listens into what we hear coming from the place, bringing its messages to our monthly moon fires so we might discern how best to live alongside each other with the earth in mind.
In the spirit of being part of a community of place Giles and Hayley also seek to inform the development of the programmes though relationship with the land and its community. Ideas are generated and tested in relationship with what else is emerging on the site as well as the seasonal turn and energy at the time. We are incorporated into the dilemmas, challenges and opportunities that are live for the community.
How might we cultivate becoming ecological alongside the impact of local building developments in the area? Is it possible to navigate between being of the current political culture whilst ‘pre-figuring’ a different way of living together with ecological in mind? Can we be open enough to the reality of the world without becoming subject to its familiar issues of mis-use of power, and yet not so closed off as to operate within an idealistic ‘bubble’?

Practically, wherever possible we encourage course participants to live on site for the duration of workshops and enjoy staying with our little
community awhile. We have a lovely small-scale campsite run by Rosie and Emma which has good, basic facilities – Mill House Camping. In addition to individual pitches for those bringing their own tent, we can
also provide tentage. For those seeking a little more comfort we occasionally have bell tent accommodation complete with bed and linen provided. For those who really don’t camp, we do have some basic
accommodation to bunk down in. Upstairs in the Granary we have a couple of single beds and the Yurt often has a handful of people stretching out on the sofas.
Visitors need to bring their own bedding and towels. There is also a well-equipped kitchen, washroom and showers available. A £10 per workshop surcharge is made, in addition to the course fee, and £25 for those using a bell tent to cover our costs.
